We have to spend some days to -pretty sadly- sell our Jeep and get the papers arranged, which is much more difficult than expected. They say 3-4 days for the papers -let's see!
Wir muessen ein paar Tage einplanen, um den Jeep to verkaufen, unseren liebgewonnenen. Auch der Papierkram wird dann nochmal- wenn man Chilenen glaubt- wird in 3-4 Tagen erledigt sein.. Mal schauen!.

The famous Indian's head of Coyhaique was the last tourist highlight we had on our journey.
Der beruehmte Indianerkopf von Coyhaique war das letzteTouristenhighlight unserer Reise.

We found a nice camping spot in the forests, and as so often had to dig deep in the aluminium storage boxes to find what we needed and get dinner prepared.
Wir fanden unseren letzten Campingplatz der Reise im Wald. Wie so oft vorher, mussten wir in den Aluminiumkisten nach Dingen suchen, die wir zum Abendessenmachen brauchten.

Once again, we had choosen a pretty tricky road ... actually more a donkey path than a road! Luckily our GPS and the 4x4 of our Jeep helped us again to find the right way.
Wir hatten wieder mal eine ziemlich schwierige Strasse ausgesucht... naja, vielleicht nennt man es besser Eselspfad. Zum Glück halfen uns unser GPS und den Allradmodus um am Ziel anzukommen.

It's such a small world! On Ben's birthday our Swiss friends Yvonne and Raphael (we met them the last time in Peru) came for a surprise-birthday-visit! The bottle of sparkling wine was emptied quickly and after chatting half of the day we went for dinner in the night.
Die Welt ist klein! An Ben's Geburtstag kamen unsere schweizer Freunde Yvonne und Raphael als Ueberraschungsbesuch (zuletzt hatten wir sie in Peru gesehen). Unser Fruehstueckssekt war schnell geleert und nachdem wir den halben Tag verquatscht hatten, gingen wir abends noch zusammen essen.

On the way North we used a "wild" camping spot near a river, however just figured out the next morning that we camped next to dead horse. Luckily the remains of the horse already passed the stage of smell badly.
Auf dem Weg in den Norden uebernachteten wir an einer freien Stelle nache einem Fluss. Am naechsten morgen fanden wir heraus, das wir neben einem toten Pferd geschlafen hatten. Zum Glueck waren die Ueberreste schon weit ueber den Punkt hinaus, wo sie riechen.

The city of Punta Arenas doesn't have a lot to offer. However the detour to the Seno Otway where you could see Magellan Penguins. Was nice to see them, however there were not too many of them.
Die Stadt Punta Arenas hat nicht viel zu bieten. Allerdings machten einen Umweg zum Seno Otway, wo es Magellanpinguine gibt. Es war schoen sie zu sehen, obwohl nur ein paar wenige da waren.

Ben wanted to see more of the pengus and made a boat trip to the Isla Magdalena where seals, cormorans and thousands of penguins live.
Ben wollte gerne mehr Pingus sehen und machte eine Bootstour zur Isla Magdalena, wo Seerobben, Kormorane und tausende von Pinguinen leben.

Some of the Magellan penguins were not shy at all, they walked directly next to us in a distancy of even less than 1m.

To get to Punta Arenas we had to cross the Strait of Magellan again. On our ferry were mainly trucks loaded with sheep. What a view (and smell)! However this time we were lucky to see black and white Commerson-dolphins. They are the smallest kind of whales in the world. By the way ... the world is sooo small ... the lifeboats on the ship came from town very close to the city where Ben is from.
Um nach Punta Arenas zu kommen, mussten wir die Magellanstrasse nochmal kreuzen. Auf unserer Faehre waren viele LKW's, welche mit Schafen beladen waren. Was für ein Blick (und Gestank)! Diesmal hatten wir aber Glück und Schwarz-Weisse Commerson-Delfine schwammen mit uns. Sie sind die kleinste Walart der Welt. Und die Welt ist wirklich wahnsinning klein ... die Rettungsboote auf dem Schiff sind aus Escherhausen, ganz um die Ecke von Salzgitter wo Ben herkommt..

After we arrived on the other side og the Magellan Strait and passed by the ship wrecks of "Barca Ambassador" (stranded 1899)" and Vapor Amadeo" (stranded 1932).
Nachdem wir am anderen Ufer angekommen waren fuhren wir an gestrandeten Schiffen vorbei -ein perfekte Motive fuer Ben's Fotos.

Ah, yes! One thing to always remember when driving: Mind the Nandus!
Ach ja! Auf der Fahrt niemals vergessen auf die Nandus aufzupassen!

Samstag 19.02.2011 Estancia (Farm) Haberton, zu Besuch bei Archaeologen, suedlichster Punkt an Land, Feuerland, Argentina

The next day we followed the road to its end. We headed for the most Southern point on the mainland that can be reached by 4x4 car. The strong wind mades trees grow inclined!
Am naechsten Tag fuhren wir die Strasse noch weiter zum suedlichsten, mit dem Auto erreichbaren, Punkt auf dem Festland.

On our way we saw a tent of archeologists. There we met Ivan, who leads this international archeological excavation project. We were just hoping to be allowed a little insight into their tent, but were explained a lot and shown around. They are searching for leftovers of food in order to find out about the natives' social behaviour. Nearby the tent was a hill with many cavities. That was shaped by Fuegians: They mainly used to eat shells and throw the natural garbage out of the tents' entrances. Once the pile was too high, they just turned the tent.
Auf dem Weg sahen wir ein Zelt von Archaeologen. Ivan, der das internationale Ausgrabungsprojekt leitet, begruesste uns gleich nett und gab uns spontan eine Fuehrung mit vielen Erklaerungen. Sie suchen nach Ueberresten von Lebensmitteln, die ihnen Aufschluss ueber das soziale Leben der Fuegianer geben. In der Naehe des Zelts gab es auch einen Huegel mit vielen kleinen Graeben. Diese sind durch die Essgewohnheiten der Fuegianer entstanden: Sie assen hauptsaechlich Muscheln, deren Schalen sie dann aus dem Zelt geworfen haben. Wenn der Stapel vor dem Eingang zu hoch war, drehten sie einfach das Zelt ein Stück.

The definetely most Southern fence and lighthouse at the Magellan Strait that can be reached by 4x4 car at the end of the world ... at that point we had to turn and head back North.
Der definitiv suedlichste Zaun und Leuchtturm an der Magellanstrasse can mit dem Jeep erreicht werden -am Ende der Welt... und dort mussten wir umkehren und wieder Richtung Norden duesen.

On our way back North we visited the Estancia Haberton. We were taken on a tour on the estancia. The house has been shipped by the owner, Thomas Bridges, from England to Argentina in 1887. Unfortunately the plans got lost on the way. They still did a good job setting it up, didn't they? The 'gate' in the garden is made by a whale's jaws. Scary!
Auf dem Weg zurueck in den Norden besuchten wir die Estancia Haberton. Wir bekamen eine Führung auf der Estancia. Das Haus wurde 1887 vom Besitzer, Thomas Bridges, von England nach Argentinien geschifft. Leider gingen die Bauplaene auf dem Weg verloren. Trotzdem sieht das Haus heute ganz ok aus. Das 'Tor' im Garten ist uebrigens aus den Wangenknochen eines Wals gemacht.

Unexpectedly there was a hands-on museum of sea mammals, crocodiles and other animals. Young students do research over there and therefore the guide was most professional. We basically had our private tour with her -great!
Vollkommen unerwartet gab es dort ein Museum fuer Meeressaeugetiere, Krokodile und andere Tiere. Die Fuehrungen werden von jungen Studenten durchgefuehrt, die dort Untersuchungen an den Knochen vornehmen. Weil wir die einzigen Gaeste waren, bekamen wir eine Privattour und durften sogar die Knochen anfassen. Wahnsinn!

Mr Bridges came as a missionary trying to teach the Fuegian original inhabitants how to do agriculture and to Christianize them. The estancia shows a traditional Fuegian house which has been rebuilt these days. People used to make fire inside the 'houses' to cook and keep warm. Because of all the smoke that could be seen from the sea the area is called Tierra del Fuego (Soil of fire) now.
Herr Bridges kam als Missionär ins Land und wollte die fuegianischen Ureinwohner christianisieren und ihnen beibringen, wie Ackerbau betrieben wird. Auf der Estancia kann man ein nachgebautes fuegianisches Haus sehen. Die Menschen haben damals zum Kochen und Wärmen Feuer gemacht. Wegen des entstehenden Rauchs, den man schon vom Meer aus sehen konnte, wurde die Gegend von Seefahrern in der Magellanstraße schließlich Feuerland genannt.

We camped near the estancia next to a river. One of the most Southern camping spots in the world ... Because of the full moon Ben managed to take some most amazing pictures.
Wir campten auf einem der vielen kostenlosen Campingplaetze dem Grundstueck der Farm. Wegen des Vollmonds konnte Ben superschoene Fotos machen.

Again we spotted a screw in one of the two front tyres - explaining why we lost so much pressure in this tire yesteray. A "Gumeria" fixed the problem quickly and we could start our trip to the final end of the world.
Wieder haben wieder mal eine Schraube in einem Vorderreifen entdeckt, was erklaert, warum wir gestern so viel Luft verloren haben. Eine 'Gumeria' loeste das Problem schnell und wir konnten unsere Reise ans endgueltige Ende der Welt weiterfuehren.
